about

The words earthy and melodic best describe the fresh sound of accomplished fingerstyle guitarist John Calvert. Harnessing aural textures from folk, jazz, flamenco and classical music, Calvert’s genuine and unpretentious compositions resound with a calming yet adventurous spirit. Though his music is difficult to categorize, John likes to classify it as simply guitar music. His latest solo release is titled, “Mandala.”

A Mandala is a symbol that springs up spontaneously from the sub conscious. For John, the Mandala represents a bull’s-eye or crosshairs aimed at awakening. As he says, “my third eye hasn't awakened yet but I can hear it snoring.” The song order forms a mandala. The two hymns are placed at the top and bottom. The second song "All Hands on Deck" and the second to last song “More Hands on Deck" are really one song split into two parts. The third song "Lu" and third to last song "Lew" are both about a relationship-good at the top, bad at the bottom. The rest of the songs are loosely paired like this, forming concentric circles until the center of the album is reached, which is Sally Cornuts-the first song John ever wrote.

John’s down-to-earth attitude, combined with outstanding musical technique, continues to delight audiences. He performs frequently at a variety of venues throughout the Phoenix area.
